Essential reading.

I probably read this book at the ideal time, for I was discouraged about the political situation and this book provided both solace and inspiration. If it happened once, that the people were rescued by someone with vision, it can happen again. Maybe it was not just a coincident that once I'd finished the book, I stumbled on all the laudatory articles on Obama, and realized he seems the closest of any of our political aspirants to the kind of self-knowlege and consequent recognition of his own fallibility that so characterized Lincoln's ability to not only use, but more, to inspire those who had been his earlier rivals. We can't give up hope, and this book helps.
