Real people. Real testimonials. Not just for WW.
4/5 Stars
While I don't believe that inspiration alone will make anyone lose weight, I do believe that it can get us started and at some points keep us going when we want to quit. The other thing that every person needs when resolving to improve their health is a practical plan and realistic ways to deal with bad habits. This book actually provides both. I found the book very easy to read (even though I do little reading currently because of small children) because of the 2-3 page per testimonial format. Each one can be read individually and is divided into "groups" with common themes such as "new moms" or "working 9 to 5". I was tempted to skip over certain sections thinking that I couldn't relate to business executives or celebrities, but found the opposite to be true. Everyone has weaknesses and we are all human beings who face the same struggles and temptations at various levels. Besides, if weight loss were only a matter of making enough money, there would be no wealthy people who are overweight, right? I am not on the WW program, but found this book inspiring. It helped me to recommit in areas where I have floundered recently. Each person shares a "take away" with a practical tip on implementing your plan of action. Each chapter provides a section for journaling to help you realistically confront your weak areas. I found all of those tools helpful. In fact, after reading through the entire book once, I have begun reading again just one testimonial daily to help encourage me. In almost every story I was able to see something of myself that helped me see my own struggle more clearly.
I only withhold one star from this because of the gender slant. It is common knowledge that men avoid such programs while women abound. Knowing this, WW has attempted to be more "inclusive" by sharing more male testimonials. The flaw I see here is that many men are "macho" and don't want to be associated with a "woman's program". While WW attempts to share more from a man's perspective, an exceptional number of those men were openly homosexual, which is the exact stereotype that these "macho guys" are fleeing from. That fact aside, I do recommend the book for those who just want some encouragement or have struggled to recommit to their own well-being, whether through WW or not.
