Readers stand alongside Beah as in a matter of hours he goes from innocent child on his way to a talent show to a witness to human tragedy, watching mortally wounded neighbors fleeing rebel forces, observing a shocked mother cradling her child shot in the head, a father telling his dead child he would be okay. From there Beah moves from witness to unwilling participant, as he is conscripted by sociopaths and forced to fight in a war about which he knew nothing.
This excellent book draws much needed attention to the use of children in armed conflict. It also reminds us that so much of what we have in our affluent society can be taken for granted.
