I ordered this book because I thought the concept of embarking on a different self-improvement project each month for a year was original and bound to be funny. I also enjoy books with short, self-contained chapters I can pick up and put down easily. This one fit the bill.
While the book isn't laugh-out-loud funny, I do enjoy Beth Lisick's humor. Assuming she's being honest and didn't make all this up, I feel she's a normal person with normal problems I can relate to. She loves her husband but doesn't try to pretend they have a perfect marriage. She admits she could use some parenting advice and has trouble controlling her four year-old. She struggles to make ends meet and wears a banana costume for extra money.
Lisick is pretty diplomatic in that she never really says anything too bad about any of the so-called experts she consults. You can tell she thinks a lot of it is crap, but she never gets too nasty or exposes them as frauds.
I was most pleasantly surprised with the chapter on Richard Simmons. I expected her to rip him to shreds for his ridiculously enthusiastic demeanor, but she has nothing but good things to say about him. She says he sincerely cares about the people who seek his help to lose weight, and I believe her. She does comment on his trademark shorts, tan and afro, but even that is done in a not-too-mean way.
I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of humor.
